Brotherhood of War

The Brotherhood of War is not merely interested in war for its own sake but its use in an ethical manner. This approach to war with honor works on many levels, from the conduct of individual soldiers and militiamen to the policy of councils and kings and the attitudes of the masses on things military. To support their goals the priest of the order act as supporters of and advisors to the military and political clans. The Brotherhood also has lay followers, members of the military clans who participate in a fraternity that combines aspects of a mystery religion with those of a more conventional church. For these followers the fraternity initiates them into the aspects of warfare that are ever present on the battle field but not seen. These are aspects of honor and justice, which transform soldiers from murderers and bandits into fighters for right.

Symbol: Sword balanced on its tip.

Organization: The Brotherhood makes use of titles to designate rank and almost all strongholds have a Brotherhood of War organized along military lines. Low-level priests are Shield Brothers, at mid level they are Axe, Spear, Sword or Hammer Brothers, depending on their principal weapon. Higher- level titles include War Brothers, Clan Warder, Hold Warder, and finally Peace Warder. The fraternity usually has a main temple in each stronghold, though it may also have chapels in other parts, usually in areas of strategic or political importance. A Peace Warder usually leads the temple though a Hold Warder may lead smaller or more peaceful strongholds. Every dwarven kingdom, and in some large kingdoms major regions, will have a high level Peace Warder that acts as the ultimate leader for the Brotherhood in that region or kingdom, Every year the leaders of all the strongholds in the kingdom will meet to share information and coordinate policy. It is said also that there are less frequent meetings of Peace Warders from many kingdoms as well as the great holds, if true these meeting are kept secret, and make decisions that are for the greater good, not the good of a particular hold or kingdom. Results of these meetings could include crusades to help dwarves who live far away, or cooperating with unpopular races, like elves, to fight a great evil.
